Until recently, most nebulizers were "Jet" nebulizers which used a small compressor to transform liquid oils or medications into a fine mist that could be easily inhaled, which was emitted through tubes.

They tended to be fairly large and noisy, with multiple parts, and the stream of droplets they diffused were not always of uniform size or small enough to really get absorbed well by the lungs. Mesh nebulizers like this represent quite an advancement on that older aerosol technology.

Instead of using the force of an air-compressor to physically break up the molecules in the original liquid, mesh nebulizers use an electronic means to serve as a grid atomizer: an electronically powered metallic disc full of tiny holes which vibrates fast enough to break the liquid down to particles less than 4 micrometres (μm) in size (which is small enough to get absorbed deep within the lungs, and not just in the upper respiratory tract and trachea), and pulsate them out. (This may be known either as a mesh cap or a piezo disc or membrane, like the one depicted here.)

These handheld 'humidifier' inhalers operate quietly, and require very little power, which enables devices like this to be work with just ordinary penlight batteries, and the device itself is quite small making it convenient for use at home or when travelling.

In addition to being more portable and discreet, this inhaler device is also less wasteful and easier to operate than traditional nebulizers. Once you've installed the batteries (or connected the USB cord to a power source), just flip open the lid, inject the liquid into the container on top and close the lid, fit your choice of either a mouthpiece or either a children's or adult sized breathing mask on, and press the on button in the middle of the handle - that's it. With fewer parts, it's also easy to clean and disinfect, disassembling with just one-click.
