Product Details

Combine history, artistry, and practicality with this drawstring bag, inspired by a vintage flea market find in Kyoto. This pattern is a copy of a traditional Japanese rice bag with patchworked vertical stripes and an enclosed drawstring channel.

The komebukuro, originally used to carry rice and offerings to temples, is rich in history. This modern adaptation allows you to stitch—by hand or machine—your own version using vintage or modern fabrics, creating a bag that’s not only practical but also steeped in tradition and personal meaning.

Possible uses:

  • A project bag for holding small craft supplies like yarn or embroidery materials.
  • A stylish storage solution for personal items or small accessories.
  • A thoughtful gift bag, customized with fabrics and embellishments to suit the recipient.

Key features:

  • Patchworked Wide Vertical Stripes: Showcase a mix of fabrics in a bold, timeless design.
  • Enclosed Drawstring Channel: Clean, polished finish with opposing cords for secure closure.
  • Efficient Fabric Use: Great for repurposing fabric scraps or treasured remnants.
  • Customizable Design: Add embellishments, sashiko stitching, or unique fabric combinations for a personal touch.

Fabric requirements:

Exterior:

  • 2 panels (8" x 10") for sides
  • 1 panel (8" x 8") for the base
  • 2 pcs (3" x 13") for drawstring channel

Lining:

  • 1 panel (10" x 29") for sides
  • 1 panel (8" x 8") for the base

Recommended Fabrics: Wovens, including linen, cotton, silk, or wool. You can also piece together smaller fabric sections for a true patchwork effect.

Additional Notions Needed:

  • 2 lengths of cording (34" each)
  • Batting square (7" x 7")
  • Sewing and sashiko needles
  • Sewing thread and optional sashiko thread for embellishments
  • Scissors or rotary cutter
  • Straight and safety pins

Finished size: 7" x 7" x 10" (17.8 x 17.8 x 25.4 cm)

Skill Level: Confident Beginner
